Jared, it's a very nice bassline that I enjoyed playing. Given how long it took me to get this early beginner bassline under my fingers, I shudder to think of an advanced version.

I agree chord tones are essential, but used in this seesaw manner makes the line a bit too predictable. I would mix in some 2 bar ascents and descents, some chromatic approaches on beat 4 as well as permutations on the sequence to give a weave effect. Having said all that, this is a brilliant way to get started learning a tune as well as your instrument.

Great choice for a video. Playing the simplest bass line I’ve seen on this channel using a Squier Affinity bass should show the earliest “Early Beginner” players that simple lines on basses that don’t break the bank can be very effective.

Why is the D not D flat in the E minor Flat 5 chord? I ask because music thoery says that a dominant 7 chord has the 7fth flattened. E minor written by circle of 5ths rules has a D natural. Flatten that D nd it becomes D flat. So why is it not D flat?

Hi Jared , Thank you for your contribution . I have his book . Since the harmony is not mentioned on those 4 blues pages , what is to be considered for those lines ? Is it standard blues changes like 111144115415 or jazz blues ?. It seems like he takes some liberty in his changes even when playing standard blues . Could you please help me out with the harmonical changes on blues , blues 1 , blues 2and blues 3 respectively . I sincerely appreciate your help

The Talk Talk (original) version, with Paul Webb’s beautiful fretless bass part, is so much better. The bass playing is expressive, full of feel that complements Mark Hollis’s vocals and the theme of the lyrics. Masterful.
